Why a beautiful logo alone isn't enough for your business

When business owners say they want to "create a brand", they are almost always thinking of a logo. That is understandable: the logo is the part people see. But it is only the tip of something much bigger.

A brand is the perception people have of your business. It is what they feel, remember and say about you when you are not in the room. A logo helps build that perception, but it cannot create it alone.

What comes before the visuals

A strong brand starts with questions no designer can answer alone. Who does the business exist for? What does it promise? Why should anyone choose it over a competitor? What tone does it use to speak to its audience?

Without these answers, a logo becomes a beautiful guess. It may please the owner, but it does not guide decisions, does not differentiate and does not sustain communication over time.

Differentiation: what the numbers show

The value of a well-defined brand shows when it truly stands apart. Kantar's most recent research helps measure this.

According to Kantar's Blueprint for Brand Growth, brands perceived as meaningfully different can reach five times the market penetration, with a growth advantage over the following two years. In another analysis based on the BrandZ database, consumers were willing to pay, on average, 14% more for these brands.

There is good news for smaller players too: in the same analysis, brands with less than 5% market share grew more than larger ones over the period studied. Standing out is not a privilege of big budgets.

The cost of short-term thinking

Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2024 report raised a warning: an excessive focus on performance marketing, at the expense of brand building, may have cost the world's top brands US$3.5 trillion in cumulative value since 2000.

For a small business, the scale is different, but the logic is the same. Investing only in ads and posts, without a clear brand behind them, generates visibility that never turns into preference.

How LakeLab works

At LakeLab, visual identity is never the starting point. Before any shape, color or name, we investigate the business through the LAKE Method©, with more than 25 analysis tools.

The result is a strategy that answers the right questions: positioning, values, personality and tone. From there, identity stops being a guess and starts expressing who the brand really is.

If you feel your business is more than its logo, but don't yet know how to show it, the first step is a conversation.
